During the calendar year 2020, the Faculty of Economics in Subotica celebrated a more than significant jubilee – it has been 60 years of existence, development and successful operation of this educational and scientific institution. The Faculty of Economics, based in Subotica, was founded on May 18, 1960 by the Law on Amendments to the University Law, Article 171, which was adopted by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, at the session of the Republic Council. For the past 60 years of business and fulfilling the scientific-educational mission of the Faculty of Economics in Subotica, 15,400 students have obtained a graduate degree in economics, based on the laws that were valid until the entry into force of the Law on Higher Education. According to the Law on Higher Education, 7,463 students graduated from basic academic studies, and 3,150 students graduated from master’s academic studies and obtained a master’s degree in economics. At the Faculty, so far, 280 students have obtained the scientific title of Doctor of Science, and 537 students have obtained the academic title of Master of Science. A large number of graduates of the Faculty of Economics in Subotica achieved and are achieving exceptional business careers, as scientists and educators, presidents of assemblies and governments, ministers, successful businessmen and managers who contribute to national and international economic development.
The Faculty of Economics in Subotica as a scientific and educational institution functions in three locations – at the faculty headquarters in Subotica, then at the Faculty Department in Novi Sad since 1977 and at the Faculty Department in Bujanovac since 2011, in the Serbian language and partly in Hungarian and the Albanian language, according to the identical curriculum, with exactly the same basic and supplementary literature. The Faculty of Economics is responsible for the education of economists, managers and business IT specialists. In certain periods of time, the curricula were changed and modernized in terms of the number and content of teaching subjects and majors, but the faculty was conceptually oriented towards the education of economists, managers and microeconomics oriented computer scientists from its very foundation. Dynamic changes in the political and economic system had an impact on the formation of departments at the Faculty of Economics and changes in curricula. Today, the organizational structure of the faculty consists of: Department of Agrarian Economics and Agribusiness, Department of International and European Economy and Business, Department of Finance and Accounting, Department of Management, Department of Business Informatics and Quantitative Methods, Department of Trade, Marketing and Logistics. In addition to departments, the faculty’s organizational structure includes the Faculty Secretariat, as well as narrower organizational units – professional services: Student Service, Financial and Accounting Service, Service for General and Technical Affairs, Scientific Work and International Cooperation, and the Library. The following centers are also organized at the faculty: Center for lifelong learning, Center for national and international projects, Center for cooperation with the economy, Sports and recreation center and Center for foreign languages.
The Faculty of Economics has been paying special attention to publishing for a long time. Every subject that is taught at undergraduate and master’s studies is provided with basic literature. Continuous work on the publication of textbooks had an effect on raising their quality and relevance. Since 1964, including interruptions from 1976 to 1995, until today, the journal “Annals” has been published in the publishing house of the faculty, in the form of two issues. The content of the magazine includes the results of research by teachers and associates, as well as experts from practice, with reviews by the most respected economists, computer scientists, managers, sociologists, philosophers from the wider regional environment. Since 1996, the Faculty of Economics has been publishing the magazine “Strategic Management”, four issues, in which the results of the most eminent theoreticians and practitioners from this scientific field are published in English. The Faculty of Economics in Subotica, together with the University of Economics in Bratislava, is involved in the publishing of the journal “Management of Information Systems”, which is published as four issues, and which deals with the issues of theoretical and empirical research in the field of management information systems.
In the past, the Faculty of Economics was actively involved in scientific research work, which it still does today, with a large number of teachers and collaborators on projects for the needs of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Provincial Secretariat for Higher Education and Scientific Research, for the needs of the authorities local authorities, economic organizations, institutions, institutions and international companies and institutions. The faculty is still recognizable for its activities related to the provision of consulting services, organizing seminars and courses of national and international importance. For 25 years, the Faculty of Economics has been organizing an international scientific conference on “Strategic Management”. The mission of the Faculty of Economics in Subotica is to prepare university-qualified economists, managers and business informatics for their future careers, during which they will be able to, as leaders in organizations, with their individuality in teamwork, the power of accumulated theoretical and practical knowledge, with sensitivity and understanding of closer and wider environment, make a significant and lasting contribution to the development of modern society.
The mission of the Faculty of Economics can be viewed through the prism of its primary activities. First of all, these are the areas of research, education and provision of professional (consulting) services. The faculty tries to achieve its mission by conducting basic and applied research and by providing research-based basic, graduate and doctoral study programs in economics, business economics, management and business informatics. The excellence, innovation and uniqueness of the realization of the educational process is realized by academic programs of the highest quality. At the same time, the Faculty’s strong ties to the local and international business community additionally provide and enrich the milieu of research and education. The unity of research and education is the basic principle of the Faculty’s activities, and freedom and diversity of opinion are the main values of this academic environment. The faculty is a place where tradition and modern ideas, i.e. theory and practice, meet.
In achieving its mission, the Faculty has always opted for four primary permanent values: a modern concept of organization, high quality and standards in the implementation of business processes, intensive international cooperation and close, meaningful connection with all constituents of the national environment.
