Belgrade
The capital of Serbia is among the oldest cities in Europe. The Celtic town of Singidunum was the first settlement on the site of the contemporary city, having been established here in the third century BCE, although neighboring Neolithic habitation ruins have been discovered. After the Romans arrived in the first century, the city was taken over by the Slavs in the sixth. Numerous nations have fought for it throughout history, including the Hungarians, the Ottoman Turks, and the Austrians. As a result, the city has been destroyed and rebuilt up to 38 times. Belgrade was established as the capital of Serbia in 1841.
The position of Belgrade, which is at the meeting point of the Sava and Danube rivers and features well-liked promenades along their banks, is what gives the city its distinct character. There are parks all around, and there are lots of eateries and cafés here, most of them floating on the river and offering breathtaking views of the city and the river.
Nestled on the banks of the Sava, the Savamala quarter is a vibrant area full of galleries, culture centers, and coffee shops with live music, and sporting works by well-known Serbian and international street artists. It makes sense that its laid-back atmosphere entices guests to unwind away from the bustle of the city.
A little further on the banks of the Danube is a cultural center called Dorćol Plac, which hosts plays, art workshops, concerts, and a host of other year-round cultural and artistic activities. When it comes to having a good time on a night out, Belgrade has plenty of nightclubs with modern music and top-notch entertainment. You can also discover traditional coffee shops with live music and amusing tunes, even if you don’t understand the lyrics. Belgrade’s well-known nightlife has given it the reputation of being a city that never sleeps!

Novi Sad
Novi Sad is a city settlement and the seat of the homonymous territorial unit in Serbia. It is the administrative center of Vojvodina and the Juznobacka administrative district. According to the 2022 census, there were 260,438 inhabitants, which makes it the second-largest settlement in Serbia. It is located in the southern part of the Pannonian Plain, on the border of Bačka and Srem.
Founded in 1694, Novi Sad was the center of Serbian culture for a long time, which is why it was often called the Serbian Athens. Today, it is a large industrial and financial center of the Serbian economy, a university, school, cultural, scientific, health, and political center of Vojvodina, a city that hosts many international and domestic economic, cultural, scientific and sports events, as well as a city of museums, galleries, libraries, and theaters. Novi Sad was chosen as the Youth Capital of Europe (2019) and the European Capital of Culture (2022) and was also included in the UNESCO list of creative cities (2023).m The city lies on the banks of the Danube River, between the 1252nd and 1262th kilometers of the river course. On the left bank of the Danube is the plain part of the city (Bačka), while on the right bank, on the slopes of Fruška Gora, is the hilly part of the city (Srem). The altitude on the Bača side is from 72 to 80 m, while on the Srem side, it is between 250 and 350 m. Near Novi Sad, the Mali Bački canal flows into the Danube (on the left side of the river), which is part of the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal system. The Bačka part of the city is located on both sides of this canal.

Kragujevac
At many points in history, Kragujevac—named after the old Serbian term for the nightingale, kraguj—has been regarded as Serbia’s “number one” city. When Serbian statehood was restored by Prince Miloš Obrenović in 1818, it became the first capital of modern Serbia. Just two years later, the nation’s first court of law was founded here, and the first general secondary school was opened in 1833. This pattern persisted until the last years of the 1800s when the first power plant in Serbia was built here in 1884.
By taking a stroll along the banks of the Lepenica River and viewing the cultural and historic complex known as “Milošev venac,” which includes the Old (Court) Church constructed in 1818 and the Assembly building from 1856.
You may unwind at one of the many cafés, coffee shops, and restaurants in the area after taking a tour of the key locations of Serbia’s modern statehood, which are located right in the center of the city.
Kragujevac, the administrative center of Šumadija, is also the location of several cultural and sporting events. Of particular note is the celebration of Kragujevac City Day, which is commemorated with a range of entertainment activities, and the Great School Class, a peacetime memorial to the German forces’ massacre of schoolchildren in this city during World War II.

Kraljevo
Even in the days of the Roman Empire, the city of Kraljevo served as a crucial stopover for traders traveling between Dubrovnik and Constantinople, but its true heyday was during the Middle Ages. The destiny of this city is closely connected to that of the Nemanjić royal dynasty, a Serbian ruling family that dominated these areas during the Middle Ages. Stefan the First-Crowned, the first Serbian king, was crowned at Žiča monastery not far from Kraljevo, and his brother Rastko, Saint Sava, is commemorated today on the main square in Kraljevo.
Originally called Karanovac, this city at the Ibar River’s confluence received its current name in 1882. The 19th century saw the construction of Kraljevo’s center square, which is round, and the intersection of the streets at a right angle, which would later become two of the city’s most notable and recognizable features.
Possibly the ideal time to visit the city is during the Lilac Days, an annual cultural celebration honoring Serbian King Uroš I Nemanjić’s bride, Helen of Anjou. To remind the future queen of her native Provence, the Serbian king had his subjects grow lilacs along the Ibar River valley just before the wedding. Additionally, Kraljevo has one of Serbia’s most exquisite coats of arms. The seven crowns atop a red throne in the city’s captivating coat of arms represent the seven crownings of Serbian rulers from the Middle Ages that took place at the adjacent Žiča monastery.

Vrnjačka Banja
Vrnjačka Banja is located in central Serbia, about 200 km south of Belgrade. Vrnjačka Banja is very well connected with all parts of Serbia by a road and railway that connects the main Balkan roads, Belgrade-Sofia and Belgrade-Athens, with the West Morava valley, and by good local roads with its forest-mountain hinterland making up a wide area of preserved natural environment.
In the north, it is bounded by the tame fertile arable land of western Pomoravlje. In the south, by over 100 km long gorge of the Ibar River that soughs its way through the mountain gorges of ancient Dardania, today’s Raška, where the Serbian state was formed. There are also high mountains with famous winter sports centers, Kopaonik being the most popular of them. Finally, this is a region with the most significant monuments of Serbian medieval culture, especially monasteries with monumental fresco paintings, some of which have been protected by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage.
